Being Different

by D
(Thailand)

Being one of the few different people in a school, it is really hard to hide my feelings when I get teased just for being different. I am not a violent person, but when I get teased something inside me just ticks off and suddenly I get this uncontrollable urge to hit something or someone.

I have been told by my teachers to control my emotions, and they even gave me this site to look for tips. So far I have been successful in controlling my anger even though the teasers may have taken it too far.

I don't know about other people's opinion but I think the techniques for anger management help me out enough to calm myself down.

Response from Dr. DeFoore

Hello D, and thanks for telling your story on this site. I'm so glad to hear that the techniques have helped you to calm yourself. I don't know what your difference is, but I do know that you are a smart person, because you're working to manage your emotions and your behavior and getting results!

It sounds like "the teasers" might also be bullies. You might find this page on dealing with bullying to be helpful. Also, this page on anger management for teens could have something of interest to you.

Whatever your differences may be, be aware that we all have them--whether they show on the outside or not. There is a great song by Keb Mo, called "Under My Skin" in which he says, "Under my skin, I'm just like you." You might enjoy that song.

My very best to you, D
