How Do You Know If You're Driven?

Think about it...if you're driven, then you're not in the driver's seat. You're not in control of where you're going.

When you feel out of control like this, you're being driven by the negative emotions of anger and fear, and you won't like where they take you. You just don't want these powerful primitive emotions in your driver's seat.

Here are some ways to know if you're driven:

  • You do what you do because you feel you have to, not because you truly want to. You do what you do because you're scared of what will happen if you don't.

  • You're driven to certain actions and choices by a desire to show someone they're wrong, or to teach them a lesson.

  • You find yourself motivated by revenge, and the desire to put somebody "in their place."

  • You react to the demands that are in front of you more than you act intentionally based on what you want to achieve.

You're driven, not driving, if you are not really sure where you're going. You're not really in charge if you don't have a clear vision in mind of where you want to go and what you want to achieve.

Our goal here is to help you get clear about where you're going, and get in the driver's seat so that you can make sure you get there.

The vehicle we're talking about, by the way, is your thoughts, feelings and actions.

"We're all going somewhere all of the time, so why not take charge of your destination and have a good time getting there?"

William DeFoore

How Do You Get In The Driver's Seat?

Put your anger and fear in the back seat. They're not going to go away, but you can certainly learn to manage them so they don't manage (drive) you.

Take full responsibility for what lies ahead of you. You're not simply a victim of what comes your way, you get to set your course and map your route.

Here are the driving skills you will need:

  • Use these journaling practices so that you can take a close look at your thoughts and feelings and gain more control over them.

  • Use these positive mindtools to keep your powerful, creative mind working for you and not against you.

  • Use regular positive imagery to focus on where you want to go and how you're going to feel when you get there.

  • Visit and revisit your destination in your mind on a regular, ongoing basis, and make up your mind that nothing will stop you from arriving there.

You are indeed the driver of your own vehicle, whether you know it or not. If you feel out of control, that just means you've given your insecurities the freedom to drive your vehicle.

Our entire anger management web site is designed to get you back in the driver's seat when your vehicle has been hijacked by your negative emotions.

You've got the tools and the fuel you need for your journey. Happy travels!
