Forgiveness Is Letting Go Of Anger

Anger is a closed fist, and forgiveness is an open hand. You can't do both at the same time.

Forgiveness is letting go of resentment, hurt feelings and blame, and anger means holding on to all of those.

Now let's look at this a little deeper:

  • Anger is a direct response to being hurt, betrayed, abandoned, rejected or violated by another person. This is natural, and there's nothing wrong with it.

  • The problem comes when you get stuck in those feelings, and start thinking about revenge, or sink into depression.

  • Getting stuck in anger hurts you, and nobody else (except perhaps the people who love you).

  • Letting go of anger and moving toward forgiveness is not denying your pain, or the wrongdoing of others.

  • Letting go of anger is a choice you make to be healthy and happy, and not give the "wrongdoer" the power to steal your joy and harm your health.

So, this is how you get started...

"Forgiveness begins when you take full responsibility for your own pain and your own healing process."

William DeFoore

Remember, there's nothing wrong with feeling angry. You just don't want to harm your own health or rob yourself of happiness because of it.

You can be hurt and angry and smart at the same time. That is called Emotional Intelligence. When you choose to move into forgiveness, you are being smart and strong, not weak.

How To Forgive

Remember, you're not letting anybody off the hook when you forgive. You're just making a healthy choice for yourself, so that you don't give away your freedom to focus on what you want and move on with your life in a positive direction.

Now let's look at some steps to take toward forgiveness...and yes, you take steps in that direction, you don't just jump straight there from feeling hurt and angry.

  • Be very clear about how you were hurt or offended, and look at your history behind it. Have you been wounded in that way before?

  • Make sure you're not unconsciously looking for this type of wounding in your life, like you see in repetitive, destructive relationships.

  • Do some anger release exercises, so that you're not subconsciously carrying anger in your body and mind that you don't really know about.

  • Now you're ready to forgive. If you haven't examined your wounds and released your anger, you simply cannot truly forgive.

  • You'll find detailed steps to forgiveness on this page, Love and Forgiveness, and more general information about forgiveness on this one called, Quotes on Forgiveness.

When you forgive, you're moving closer to your true nature, which is loving and kind. When you forgive, you're being true to the wise, strong person you truly are.
