What Makes You Jealous?

You may have very good reasons to be jealous...or you may be caught in the trap of a suspicious mindset.

One thing is for sure. It's a miserable feeling, and you don't want it.

Here are some things that are likely to make you jealous:

  • You actually see your partner flirting with someone else.

  • You have a feeling something is going on, but you don't have any direct evidence.

  • You have seen receipts, smelled perfume or cologne, or other physical evidence that leads to suspicion.

  • You may feel your partner drifting away or losing sexual interest, and your mind drifts to the possibility of another man/woman.

The important thing to remember here is this...

"Whether your partner is being true to you or not, you need to be true to yourself by focusing on your own goodness and value."

William DeFoore

Jealousy and suspicion are not healthy for you, no matter what is causing it. You can't afford to "wait until the other person acts right." You will only feel better when you start taking positive action on your own behalf.

How To Let It Go And Move On

First priority is to recognize that you cannot control anybody else but yourself.

To get a totally in-depth look at jealousy and how to break free from it, visit our web pages on signs of jealousy and overcoming jealousy.

Jealousy is all about focusing negative thoughts on others, and you're not doing yourself any favors when you do that. You're seeing yourself as losing out or missing out, and that lowers your own sense of worth and value.

Here are some ways to let go of jealousy and suspicion and move on with your life:

  • The first step is to decide that you are worthy of being loved and appreciated. Jealousy often comes from low self esteem, and developing self love may be a real key to moving forward.

  • The next step is to assess your relationship. If you know for sure that your partner is acting in an untrustworthy manner, it may be time to step away from the relationship, temporarily or permanently.

  • If you think you may only be jealous because of your own insecurity, consider getting some personal counseling to deal with your own emotional issues.

  • Learn about letting go of a relationship, and be sure you're not holding onto an unhealthy situation out of fear.

The bottom line here is to love yourself and create as good a life for yourself as you possibly can, no matter what your partner is or is not doing. That is your true freedom and control.

You can do this. Focusing on yourself and what you need is centering and grounding, and it will stabilize you. Shifting your focus from others to yourself is a sign of maturity, especially when your self focus is one of healthy self love and self appreciation.
