What Is Self Empathy?

Self empathy is seeing yourself, past and present, with understanding, kindness and compassion.

Self empathy will soften your heart toward those you love, allowing you to be more relaxed and loving in all of your relationships.

Here are some key points to help you undersand why it's important to have empathy for yourself:

  • Without a sense of caring and compassion for yourself, you will have a harder time being caring and compassionate with others.

  • In some cases, an absence of self empathy can lead to self-loathing and self-destructive behavior.

  • This can contribute to problems with anger, anxiety and depression.

  • When you learn to look at yourself with understanding, forgiveness and kindness, recognizing your good heart and positive intentions, you will be more likely to take care of yourself with diet, exercise and healthy boundaries in relationships.

Another way of looking at this is that self empathy is an essential part of healing your past emotional wounds, which is absolutely necessary for healing your anger issues.

How Do I Develop Self Empathy?

You've probably heard it said, "You have to love yourself before you can love someone else." Well, that's what we're talking about here.

One reason it's so hard to love yourself is that you're acutely aware of your shortcomings and failings...we all are. The thing is, you always meant to do good, however far astray you may have gone.

So here's your chance to let go of some of that baggage that's been holding you back:

  • Through journaling, meditation and self reflection, look into the heart of your deepest pain, regret, trauma and shame, for the purpose of understanding what happened and how it affected you.

  • Focus on yourself, not the other people involved. It's much easier to focus on others, and here's your chance to look into your own heart for perhaps the first time.

  • Picture an image of yourself at the time of your pain/trauma, and look deeply into the eyes of your younger self. Really try to get a sense of what the wounded you is saying with her/his eyes.

  • As the adult you are today, say to the child, "I'm here. I understand. You're a part of me. I will never leave you."

  • When you feel ready to do so, embrace the younger you, and take him/her to the safest healing place you can think of or imagine.

There is a lot more to this process, which you can explore further here.

Whatever you do, do not give up on yourself. When you work on your past, it will not work on you.

This is your key to not only greater emotional control, but deeper love and joy in your life as a whole.

This audio CD/download program will take you on a beautiful journey into yourself that will provide healing, self empathy and emotional well being.

Here is a quote about Nurturing Your Inner Child:

"We've been looking for some first-rate, sophisticated, inner child guided exercises for years now, but until we found Dr. DeFoore’s beautiful work and wonderful voice, there was nothing we wanted to carry. These meditations and affirmations on healing and self-love are the real deal, offering reparative images and cognitive counterweight for those whose sense of self was profoundly injured in childhood. Segments range from just a few minutes to almost 9 minutes. They are perfect for those in recovery from childhood sexual abuse, spousal abuse, substance abuse or just a tough, harsh childhood. This was worth waiting for, and we’re delighted to offer this."
