How Can Anger Help My Focus?

Actually, your anger can cause you to lose focus...if it's unhealthy. But when your anger is healthy and working together with your wisdom and good heart, it can greatly enhance the power, intensity and duration of your focus.

Here's how this works:

  • Extreme (unhealthy) anger activates your fight-or-flight reptilian brain, which can literally shut down higher brain functions and limit your visual acuity.

  • This is where the term "blind rage" comes from.

  • By definition, when your anger is healthy, it means you can still think clearly and make good decisions.

  • When it's not overwhelming, anger actually sharpens your focus, as you become determined to be smart in how you handle the perceived threat or problem.

  • Successful, healthy people get angry just like everybody else...they just don't let it take over, and they're really good at taking effective action when their anger gets triggered.

You've probably heard or read about the difference between reacting and responding...that's what we're talking about here.

When you're upset about something, but still "have your wits about you" you can think things through and decide on the best way to respond.

This is why you often hear "take ten deep breaths" and "take a walk around the block" as anger management strategies.

"Anybody can become angry - that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not within everybody's power and is not easy."

Aristotle

A reaction is always immediate and fast, and usually unconscious...meaning, you're not thinking when you react.

A response can be considered, planned and well thought out, which is all the more important if you're angry. Keep in mind that anger by itself is not smart - it only works effectively when you combine it with your wisdom and compassion in a healthy, smart response.

Those higher brain functions that shut down when anger takes over...and the same functions you need to respond in healthy, smart ways...allow you to see the big picture, to think through consequences, and plan for the most positive outcomes.

Now let's look at how your powerful mental focus can create the quality of life and relationships that you want.

What Can Powerful Focus Do For Me?

Your mind is powerful, whether you realize it or not. And it's always focusing in one direction or another. Take charge of this focusing process, and you can literally change your life for the better.

When you allow worry, fear and "the worst case scenario" to dominate your attention, you will not only create stress for yourself, but you could also generate the very outcomes you fear and worry about.

Here are some ways to use your focus to create what you want:

  • Focus on your past with gratitude, your present with appreciation, and your future with optimism, as in this journaling process.

  • This will exercise and activate your higher brain functions, and actually motivate you to take more positive, productive action on your own behalf...to create those positive outcomes you're optimistically looking forward to.

  • The more you consider those positive possibilities you want in your future, the more likely you are to look for evidence that they are actually happening.

  • And the more you look for the good, the more good you will find. It's here, now, always...look for it and watch it grow.

You are a powerful creator...you're not a victim. And the mechanism with which you create is your mental focus and follow-through.

Think of all of the people who have risen above their circumstances...you can do that too. Whatever it is, set your sites higher and better, and take the next best steps to get you there.

There is goodness and greatness inside you...it's in all of us. What are you going to do with yours?
