What Is Emotional Intelligence?
The simplest and easiest answer is...your level of emotional intelligence (EQ) is reflected by how well you understand, manage and express your emotions.
When you have a high EQ, you also have more positive, healthy and loving relationships with others and you're more successful professionally. It's actually much more important than your IQ (intelligence level)!
Now let's take a look at the four domains of emotional
- The first level is self-awareness...how well you know and understand yourself, your thoughts, beliefs, emotions and behavior patterns.
- The second domain is self-management...how successful you are in accessing, controlling and expressing the full range of your emotions.
- The third domain is social awareness, which is how well you understand human needs, behaviors and communication patterns.
- The fourth and final domain of EQ is relationship management...how well you create and maintain successful, happy, loving relationships with others.
Think of it this way...
"Other words for high EQ are maturity, wisdom,and just plain old common sense."
When you have a high EQ, you deal with your negative emotions (pain, fear and anger) in healthy and efficient ways, and you experience and express far more positive emotions (joy, love, peace, contentment, enthusiasm) than negative ones.
Raising your EQ
is no small matter. One way to get started right now is by getting some positive email messages daily!
How Can I Improve My EQ?
What a great question! Keep asking that, and always look to the answers, and you will grow in happiness and successful relationships for the rest of your life.
This is a big subject, and there's a lot to it, so we'll give you an overview here,
with some links where you can get more guidance:
- Make up your mind to improve in these four areas (self awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management) for the rest of your life.
- Grow your self-awareness by exploring your personal life story, and looking at all of the significant milestone experiences in your past.
- Work on increasing your self-management skills (this includes anger management, of course). This is a big one, and successful social awareness and relationship management depend on success in self-management.
- Improve your social awareness by being curious about "what makes us tick" as human beings, and enjoy the ongoing process of learning about social needs and social behavior patterns.
- Your relationship management skills are so important it would be hard to overstate it. Research is consistently showing how friendships and close intimate connections with others are the major contributors to health and happiness at all ages, especially among the elderly.
You can do this! And the rewards that lie in store for you when you do are truly wonderful.
As a final note, a big part of anger management and emotional intelligence is using the power of your mental focus to pay attention to what is good, right and working about yourself, your life, and your relationships.
