What Are We Talking About Here?

Strength and vulnerability seem like opposites...you've probably always thought strength is good, vulnerability bad.

Actually, like our subtitle says, you can't have one without the other. And that tells us you can have both at the same time.

Let's look at how this works:

  • Unhealthy anger gives the illusion of strength without vulnerability...when you're in a rage, you want to seem invincible and invulnerable. But it's a lie...just ask any strong person, who is also wise.

  • You've got a soft center...we all do. So, when you act like nothing can hurt you, you're pretending, and not being honest with yourself or others.

  • A truly stong person can admit fear, pain and vulnerability...while still being strong at the same time. This is true strength.

  • Think about it...if you know yourself, and you're aware of your inner feelings of pain, fear and the need for love, you don't have to be afraid of those emotions.

  • When you're honest about yourself, and you have nothing to hide, you are immeasurably stronger than if you're hiding something and afraid of revealing it.

I think you get the picture. Imagine a powerful man or woman with tears in her/his eyes, with intense focus and clarity.

No loss of control, just powerful emotional presence.

"Your greatest power comes from intense focus and clarity of purpose, with self awareness of your inner vulnerability."

William DeFoore

Now let's talk about how you can arrive at this powerful intersection of strength and vulnerability.

These are steps you can take any time. It's your choice and your freedom.

This is not difficult or complicated. You don't have to join any organization, or learn any new words. Just take the steps listed below, and you'll be surprised how fast you start feeling better.

Emotional Intelligence

How To Be Strong & Vulnerable At The Same Time

Being emotionally intelligent means being strong and smart with your emotions, no matter what.

Here's a step-by-step process:

  • Self awareness: This is a matter of knowing your life story and how it affected you. It means knowing your strengths and weaknesses, and your pain, fear, joy and love.

  • Self management: This is where you develop the skills for managing and expressing all of your emotions in healthy ways. Inner child work is a big help with this step.

  • Social awareness: This is where you educate yourself about other people, social dynamics, and relationship patterns.

  • Relationship management: Here is the step where you put the first three steps into motion. This is where you show the strength of vulnerability, by being a warm, caring and sensitive person, while also being extremely strong, flexible and resilient. Developing a positive, upbeat attitude is key to all of this!
