I remember reading somewhere that the right patients are drawn to the right doctor. I also think that this is true with people on an everyday basis.
I was visiting my sister at a mental hospital once and I noticed some of the other patients. At the time I was pretty messed up and had not even started working on my own recovery from my childhood. There were two patients there who seemed to be equally troubled. When I looked into the eyes of one of the patients I felt as if what I had experienced and learned in my past and what she had experienced and learned in her past combined. We both felt very sad for awhile and then afterwords we both felt clearer and saner.
I felt as if we had healed through something together. She smiled at me and I smiled at her. When I looked into the eyes of the other patient I felt totally messed up, knocked off balance, and spent hours trying to gain my sanity back. I felt as if the second connection truly set me back. What the difference was between the two and me, only God knows.
I think that we are here on the Earth for ourselves and for each other too. Who we are supposed to be in a support group with may be different for everyone. I also believe that there are times when a group of people who are meant to be supportive to each other and heal together are all drawn to the same location.
This could be true in a work place, a neighborhood, a grocery store, a support group, or anywhere else. Sometimes I think that the whole world is a support group.
