The Shortcomings Of Mainstream Schools
by Ross
(Canada)
School is such a problem for so many children.
Why have we not listened to the children and figured out that the "big box" is nothing but fear, frustration and broken promises for so many kids?
I have one young person I see that moved from the main stream school to a 1 to 1 teacher, where he receives mostly outdoor experiential learning. After being put in a different setting, he went from a severe behaviour problem to a great young person.
Response from Dr. DeFooreHello Ross, and thanks for telling your story here. I'm sure a lot of people share your perspective about schools. I recently read some research that shows how creativity in children declines more for every year of school they attend. There is no question that schools can and should be improved.
And, of course, there are those who have found exactly what they needed in school. For some, it's a place to learn and grow and make meaningful connections. We really can't judge all schools together as if they were all the same.
There are no easy answers or solutions to the problem of inadequacy in schools that I know of. Concerned people like you, however, can make a difference. I encourage you to express your opinions and perspectives, just as you have on this web site.
Continue to be a champion of children, and I wish you all the best of success!
My very best to you,
Dr. DeFoore
