I Was Fired By My Parents!
by Anonymous
My parents asked me to come take over their business so they could retire. So, I closed up my own profitable business, packed up my house, enrolled my son in a new school, and moved to where they live.
Within minutes after the moving van arrived with all of my worldly possessions, my parents fired me. Why? Because, my mother decided she wasn't ready to retire after all. I had been working for one month, got no severance pay, nothing. I had done a great job in the short amount of time I was there, as the financial books will show.
It was a power trip on my mother's part and my dad was along for the ride. Seven months later, I'm still reeling, trying to start over, trying to forgive. My mother tells me I need to "get over it and move on".
I should have heeded the warning signs, but living halfway across the country, I was looking at everything through rose-colored glasses. I sincerely thought I could help. This has torn apart our large family. Meanwhile, I'm trying to start over and "get over it".
Response from Dr. DeFooreHello, and thanks for telling your story here. You have every right to be angry. From what you have written here, it is clear that your were treated in a very unfair and disrespectful way.
Try to find a way to get stronger and smarter because of this experience. That's the only way you won't hold resentment and find yourself feeling like a helpless victim to how they've treated you. Look for ways to make your business and your life even better than they were before. Do this for yourself, and find the distance from which you can love your parents. That means managing your contact and communication in such a way that you feel your resentment fading.
The journaling process described
on this page might also be helpful to you, so that your anger has "somewhere to go" and doesn't just fester in your heart and mind.
Come out of this a winner. Be a champion to yourself.
My very best to you,
Dr. DeFoore
