I Need Help With My Anger While Dealing With The Aftermath Of Medical Procedures

by Stacey
(Scotland)

I had a brain tumour at the age of 5 and had surgery to remove it...resulting in a brain injury. I then had 6 weeks of intense radiation therapy to my neck and spine, and was given to the end of the year.

That was 15 years ago.

I now have possible nerve ending damage from the radiation and also have other medical conditions. I have a very short fuse and have been going in and out of depression for the past 3-4 years.

I've been self-harming and really think I need some help now.

Response from Dr. DeFoore

Hello Stacey, and thanks for telling your story here. As I am not a medical doctor, I cannot advise you regarding your medical condition, but I can recommend some tools that will help you with your psychological and emotional processes.

I recommend you do the three journaling processes described on this page. This will help you review past trauma, channel your anger in a healthy way, and begin shifting your focus in a positive direction.

The positive journaling will be especially helpful to you. There has been some research indicating that the expression of positive emotion is healthy for the brain, and can help individuals such as yourself to bypass injured areas. You will find some of that research cited in this book.

I also suggest you consider working on your self esteem, using tools like these CD programs.

The end result of this Stacey, if you use any or all of these tools, is that you will begin to see the goodness and value in who you are. Regardless of your limitations, you have worth, and something to offer.

Believe in yourself, your value, and your unique gifts.

My very best to you,

Dr. DeFoore
