I Just Can't Seem To Stop Being Angry
by Brandon
(U.S.A.)
I am a teen in high school and there are many things in my life right now that seem to be as bad as possible. My mom won't stop yelling and reminding me of my past mistakes and I am stressed because of high school.
Sometimes I just want to go live with my dad. When I go to my dad's house it's so peaceful and relaxing. Although, when I get back home to my Mom's house its back to the same yelling and nonstop anger. I also sometimes get violent with my brother (I've never actually injured him but I think he may actually be scared of me) and it seems like every little thing makes me uncontrollably angry.
I want it to just go away. And I don't want to start anger management but, if it is necessary, I would like to learn more about it. Any ideas on how I can release anger without becoming violent?
Response from Dr. DeFooreHello Brandon, and thanks for telling your story here. You sound like a smart guy, who wants to do the right thing. Good for you. I will try to help.
You will find some really helpful techniques for releasing your anger in healthy ways on this
FAQ page. These are powerful methods, but they only work if you use them. Consider making a deal with yourself to try them for at least two weeks. I think it will help you.
Are you old enough to choose where you live? You might want to check your legal rights, and see if you can just live full time with your dad, if that feels right to you. It sounds like your relationship with your mom is really hard for you, and could be causing your anger.
Either way, you're responsible for your anger, no matter what anybody else does.
You can do this, Brandon. Believe in yourself.
My very best to you,
Dr. DeFoore
