Hmm...Do I Need Help?

by Ashly

My name is Ashly, and I am 16 years old.

I have always had myself a little anger problem. It eventually grew and grew, and now I get gruesome thoughts in my head about hurting people, or just different ways to beat the crap out of people when I'm angry.

When I'm at my house, I don't think about hurting my family. I just get really angry and go in my room and hit myself really hard until I can't take the pain anymore. I don't hit anything else because I don't want to damage anything.

I know I have a problem, and my family tells me I have anger problems all the time, but I don't want to get help because I'm afraid they'll lock me up in a mental institution. What should I do?

Response from Dr. DeFoore

Hello Ashly, and thanks for telling your story here. I want you to consider that you have good reasons for your anger--you just need to find out what they are. Do all of the exercises recommended in #1 on our FAQ page, and I think that will help you understand your anger better.

And you need to stop taking it out on yourself. Hurting yourself is no better than hurting someone else--it's just easier to hide.

Take a look at our page on self love and self esteem, and consider getting some copies of these CDs on self esteem to help you start feeling better about yourself.

Just for a bonus, watch this great video called "I Believe In You."

Be a champion to yourself, Ashly, and make up your mind you're going to create a good life for you.

My very best to you,

Dr. DeFoore
