Argument With My Mom

by Akshay
(India)

Once a lot of homework was given at school and there was also a maths viva. A social science test was also there on the next day.

Due to the burden of homework I just forgot about the test. When test occurred at school I got very bad marks, but my viva was the best among all my fellow classmates. I reached home both happily as well as sadly. I told them about the viva.

They didn't congratulate me but when I told about the test my mom started yelling over me even though I accepted my mistake. I heard for 2-3 minutes but after that I couldn't bear.

I also started yelling and then we were in a bad argument. For calming my anger down I broke my mom's purse and the tubelight of my room (though the tubelight was broken by mistake).

Now she is not talking to me. What to do?

A hurt son.

Response from Dr. DeFoore

Hello Akshay, and thanks for telling your story here. I suggest that you start keeping a daily journal, writing down all of your angry thoughts first. Then, when you've written all of your angry and unhappy thoughts, write about all of the good things: what you like about yourself, your friends, your school, and your life in general. Then write about what you like about your mother, and all of the members of your family.

You will find guidelines for these journaling practices on this page. This will help you to process and manage your anger, and even more important, it will help you to start focusing on the good in your life, which is the best anger management tool of all!

My very best to you,

Dr. DeFoore
