Angry Teen Son In Conflict With His Father

by Karla
(Columbus, OH)

My son is 16. He has a lot of problems controlling his outbursts when he is angry. He is ADHD, but that is the least of the problems.

He has been physically violent. He has taken a bat and beaten his dad's truck with it. He gets very upset for the slightest things. He doesn't get along with his dad at all.

He even asked the other day if I could help him find a way to get this under control.

Response from Dr. DeFoore

Hello Karla, and thanks for telling your story here. It sounds like your son is really having trouble, and it's great that he wants some help.

Ideally, he and his dad would get some counseling together, to work on their relationship. Check your resources and see if that is a possibility in your area, or contact us for more information.

Otherwise, or even if they do get counseling, it would be good for him to do the threee journaling processes on this page, if he has the discipline and desire.

He might also benefit from practicing these anger management techniques on a daily basis.

Suggest to him that he read this page that is designed for teenagers dealing with anger.

If he's really serious about getting help, and if you're willing to support him in this, he may want to sign up for online anger management classes. He can choose from 8, 12, 16 or 26 hour classes.

You and your husband might want to check out the Total Transformation Program designed to help parents of troubled teens.

See your son at his best in your mind, Karla. Trust him to come through this better off on the other side. Focus on your own life and happiness, and trust him to do what he needs to do for himself.

My very best to you,

Dr. DeFoore
