What Is The Silent Treatment?

Most of us have experienced this, either because someone was doing it to us or we were doing it to them. Take a look at this page to learn more about this problem.

Here are some ways of getting clear about what the silent treatment really is:

  • It basically means you're not talking, shutting someone out or even ignoring them.

  • Between spouses, it usually means just saying the "bare minimum" of what needs to be said.

  • It can involve not smiling, avoiding eye contact, or pretending the other person is not even there.

  • Sometimes it is intentional, and sometimes not--either way it hurts on the receiving end.

If the silent treatment is used intentionally to hurt someone, it will certainly be more damaging to the relationship. When it is unintentional, however, it might be the best you can come up with in certain situations.

Is The Silent Treatment Always Wrong?

The answer is no, it's not always wrong. If you're:

  • Being quiet to keep from blowing up

  • Not talking because you can't think of anything helpful to say and everything you do think of is hurtful

  • At a point where all of the talking seems to just make things worse

then maybe being quiet is the perfect choice for a while.

However, if you're:

  • Deliberately not talking to or ignoring your partner to "drive them crazy"

  • Shutting your partner out and acting like they don't exist as an effort to punish them

  • Playing a game of "silent warfare" filled with glares, grunts, and other non-verbal negative communication

then you're damaging your relationship and ultimately making things worse for yourself as well.

What Do You Do About The Silent Treatment?

Start by checking out this entire page on The Silent Treatment.

At its best, the silent treatment is simply a matter of not knowing how to communicate--in other words, you don't know what to say, so you don't talk.

At its worst, the silent treatment is a deliberate effort to avoid communication--either way, it's about communication.

If there was not some kind of hurt, fear or anger going on, there would be no need to shut down. So, the solution to the problem is healthy communication.

  • A key component of healthy communication is empathy--learn empathy skills now.

  • If you're stuck in a painful silence, it's time for conflict resolution. Learn effective communication skills.

  • It may be time to give yourself the silent treatment. What I mean is, get a little more intimate with yourself. If you're giving or receiving the silent treatment in your relationships, that might be reflecting some things going on within you.

  • And it might be time to learn about healthy anger and how to express it! Check out our audio progam below...
