What Is The Inner Child?

Is inner child work for wimps? Is it goofy, and namby-pamby? The answer is clearly no!

It takes more courage and strength of will to do deep inner child healing work than most people realize. It's all about your good heart. The inner child resides in your heart and in your body, more than in your mind. This newsletter will teach you how to become more aware, and to heal and nurture your heart and body (your inner child) more effectively.

Does your inner child get angry? Not as I see it. In my view, there is a different image for anger. Anger is a protector, so I like a warrior image for that emotion, as the child represents the more vulnerable emotions of sorrow, fear, shame and loneliness.

So, let's figure out what it really is. Let's take a look at the different aspects of the inner child now:

The inner child of the past, present and future: When we talk about the inner child, we’re referring to an image of your child self. This image may be one that you access by looking at a photograph of yourself as a child, or simply by closing your eyes and picturing yourself as a child. The child can be of any age, however it is useful to be able to visualize yourself at different ages in order to access different memories and emotions.

Now let’s look at some of the different aspects of the child within:

  • The inner child of the past: This is an image of yourself that matches with a certain time in your own past. This child can help you find and access memories and feelings that will help with your healing. S/he may appear sad, lonely, lost, afraid or deeply hurt.

  • The inner child of the present: While the inner child of the past helps you with your healing, the inner child of the present helps you with your self-care on a current and ongoing basis. In order to get clear readings from the present child, the child of the past must have some degree of healing already accomplished.

  • The inner child of the future: Some of the images of your inner child can be a kind of earmark for you, indicating future possibilities for your development and self-expression.

  • The magical child: This image of the child (which can be a great one for your future child image), suggests a wellspring of energy. From this wellspring emerge your humor, play, spontaneity, creativity, joy and capacity for unconditional love. The magical child also provides a doorway to wisdom and undeveloped powers.

How Do I Heal And Nurture My Inner Child?

There are basically two ways to heal, nurture and care for your inner child--visualization and affirmation.

First let's look at visualization. This is the most powerful tool for emotional healing and inner child work, because it accesses emotion through the right hemisphere of the brain and creates more real, lasting change.

It’s not complicated. Here’s how it works when you imagine yourself as an adult relating to your inner child:

  1. Emotional memory is stored in your “emotional brain,” which you may have heard of as the limbic system. The image of your inner child in the healing visualization represents a particular emotional memory from your past.

  2. When you picture an image of your inner child in your mind, you're using your “right brain” to make the picture, which brings up the emotion of the memory.

  3. When you imagine yourself as an adult talking to, holding, and nurturing your inner child, it is actually like two parts of your brain talking to each other.

  4. This is what creates the healing and forms new neural connections in your brain as if what you imagined actually happened.

This actually allows you to change how your brain operates--and how you react emotionally when under stress or threat.

Here is a guided imagery process that shows you how visualization works for healing past emotional trauma.

And now here are some examples of inner child affirmations:

  • I was born innocent and open
  • As an infant, my eyes ears and mind were wide open
  • The child I once was is alive within me, right now
  • I am still an open, innocent child, deep within myself
  • Within my innocent, open self, I feel a natural and spontaneous love for the world
  • I was born with the ability to love
  • Deep within me, what I want most is to love and to be loved
  • It is completely natural for me to need and experience love
  • The child that I am deep inside is good

You will find both visualizations and affirmations on the Nurturing Your Inner Child CD/Audio download.

What Results Can I Expect?

inner child

All of our lives, we've heard that we're supposed to love ourselves. Well, how exactly am I supposed to do that? Here's your answer...inner child work is the quickest and most effective way to learn to love yourself that exists!

Think about it. It's easier to love children than it is to love grownups, right? We've all experienced that. So, when it comes to loving yourself, you'll have an easier time doing that when you see yourself as a child, than if you just try to love yourself as the adult you are today. Eventually, you will get to where you love yourself as an adult, but the child comes first.

The more you work with your inner child, the more you are activating and developing yourself as a caring, powerful, nurturing adult! In the visualization, for example, when you are seeing the child within, the "you" that is seeing the child is not the child--it's the strong, caring adult who has the courage and good heart to look inside into the emotional world.

So, what you can expect from doing inner child work is:

  1. Learning to love yourself.

  2. Taking better care of yourself--body, mind and spirit.

  3. Being a more focused, powerful, strong, gentle and loving adult.

Never, ever give up on yourself. You can do this, because you're a good person with a good heart. Stay with it, and you will get there.
