It's Not About The Child

If your child is angry, there is always a good reason for the anger. I know, it may be hard to figure out what that reason is, but I assure you it's there.

And the answer is never just, "he's just an angry child," or "she's always had a bad temper." Here are some thoughts to consider:

  • Your child is good. S/he was born with the need to love and be loved.
  • You're human, so you have not met all of your child's needs perfectly.
  • Therefore, your child has experienced pain, sorrow and fear.
  • And that's where their anger comes from.

Anger is a normal, healthy response to pain and fear. The healing happens when you find out what that pain and fear is, and deal with it in healthy ways.

One of the most common causes of child anger is neglect of basic needs. Learn more about children's basic emotional needs on this page.

How Can I Help My Angry Child?

You want to help because you're a good person, and a good parent--that's why you're here, reading this.

Relax, read through this, and see what resonates with your personal internal wisdom.

  • First, heal your own anger, so that you can be a good, healthy role model to your child. This is the most powerful influence that you can have.
  • Develop and maintain a positive mental picture of your child. Every time you think of your child, see them at their best, behaving well and cooperating.
  • Use these positive journaling exercises to begin focusing your mind on the very best and most positive aspects of your child.
  • Learn and practice all of the skills described on this child anger management page.

You have so much positive power as a loving parent! This is not a matter of blaming yourself for the problem, it's a matter of taking responsibility for the solution.

You have everything it takes to help your angry child. Believe in yourself and the goodness in your heart. Use the resources I've referenced here, and you can do it!

One of the best resources I know of for helping children who are defiant and oppositional, is the Total Transformation Program. I am an affiliate with the parent company, Legacy Publishing, Inc.--that's how much I believe in this program!
