Fear Is Natural And Healthy
Okay, you ask, if fear is so natural and healthy, then why is it such a problem for so many people? Why do so many suffer from anxiety symptoms, for example?.
Good questions. Let's look at some possible answers:
- Fear is simply your body/mind's internal alarm system, letting you know that something is wrong or threatening. We would not survive without it.
- We were not educated about fear, so most of us feel that we shouldn't have it, or that there's something wrong with having fear of any kind.
- Since we didn't learn to accept and get smart with our fear, it retreated into the subconscious mind, where it has a mind of its own and can take over without our awareness, as with anxiety attacks.
- As you become emotionally healthy, your fear transforms into vigilance and awareness, which actually make you stronger and safer.
- Being healthy does not mean having "no fear," it means being focused, aware and even optimistic while facing fear-producing situations
In this way, fear is like anger. Both emotions are healthy, but you don't want them taking over and controlling your thoughts and actions.
Your fear needs the help of your courageous heart and your brilliant mind to function the way it is supposed to--to keep you safe.
How Does Fear Turn Into Anger And What Can You Do?
You might think fear is the opposite of anger, and in some ways it is. Fear is the "flight" emotion, and anger is the "fight" emotion.
Now let's look at how they are related, and specifically how fear can feed into anger, and make its fire burn hotter:
- Since fear is the "flight" emotion, and sometimes you can't or don't want to run away, the option becomes to "fight," which is where the anger comes in.
- A lot of people don't know this, but the greatest anger comes straight out of a feeling of helplessness and powerlessness...in other words, the greatest anger comes straight out of extreme fear.
- How many times have you heard the phrase, "backed into a corner" just before "came out fighting"?
- The good news is that when anger is healthy, it solves the problem of fear.
