Out Of Control Anger Shuts Down Your Brain

It's a fact. Extreme anger shuts down higher brain functions, such as the neocortex, which is what you've heard of as the "right brain" and the "left brain." That's the thinking part of your brain, and when the fight-or-flight (feeling) part of your brain gets overactive, the lights go out in the thinking part.

This is why you can be a pretty smart person, get extremely angry, and do some very not-smart things. Think about it...when you're really angry, are you at your best? Of course not. Here's how it works:

  • You feel threatened, and that's why you're angry.

  • When you feel threatened, the primitive (reptilian) part of your brain literally takes over, and pushes the other brain functions aside so it can take care of business.

  • The problem is, this usually happens with the people you love the most--that's where your heart is open, so that's where you're the most vulnerable and easily threatened.

  • So when those higher brain functions shut down, you forget how much you love this person you're mad at, and you start feeling like they're your worst enemy.

  • You know how it goes from there. The explosion occurs, you feel the release, you eventually calm down and think, "Oh no, what have I done?" You're feeling regret because you have calmed down enough for your higher brain functions to kick in and you know you don't really want to hurt your loved ones.

This is why a really good person (like yourself) can end up doing some really bad, destructive things. It doesn't have to be that way.

Keep reading to find out how your anger can become more intelligent.

How To Learn Intelligent Anger

Usually, we don't think of anger and intelligence in the same breath, because as we discussed above, out of control anger makes us less intelligent. But what about healthy anger?

When anger is healthy, the higher brain functions still work! Imagine that...strong emotion and intelligence at the same time.

This is what the term "emotional intelligence" is all about...being emotional and intelligent at the same time. Not only that, but when anger is healthy, you also have love and compassion on board! Now let's look at how we get there:

  1. Get smart about anger. That's what the AngerManagementResource web site is all about.

  2. Make a list of what matters the most to you. These are your values.

  3. Make up your mind to live by those values. Chances are, your loved ones are at the top of your list--do you treat them with kindness and respect?

  4. Now take action. Learn anger management techniques and how to forgive, so that you can be the kind of person you choose to be.

  5. And last but not least, be sure you heal emotionally, so that you can truly love yourself--the first step to loving others.

When you have the power of love, intelligence and healthy anger all working together, there is nothing beyond your reach.

Believe in yourself. Watch this great video, and imagine that the singer is singing directly to you.
