How Do You Know If You Have Anger Addiction?

Great question to get us started. I'm glad you asked!

Here is how the process seems to work:

  1. Something, inside you or in your life, is making you feel helpless and out of control. It might feel like there's a boiling volcano in your gut that is just waiting to explode--even though you might not know where it is coming from.

  2. Then something happens...it might be big or little, but it is just enough for you to blow up.

  3. And so you do have your blow up. You vent your anger, yell, scream, accuse, blame or even hit or throw things.

  4. Whether you know it or not, while you're having your blow up, you don't feel helpless and powerless any more. You're not happy by any means, but the anger feels better than the fear, anxiety and helplessness. That's your "rush" or "high" that creates the addiction.

  5. Next you go into guilt, apology or shame--which you may or may not express. Either way, you don't feel so good when the "high" of the anger rush wears off.

  6. Then, after a few days, weeks or even months, the old feelings of irritation, frustration, anxiety build up inside once again until you have another explosive release.

The main thing to look for to know if you are addicted to anger or rage is repetitive patterns of getting angry, blaming, criticizing, etc. Other people are responsible for their actions, but you are responsible for your reactions--especially for your patterns.

What Causes Anger Addiction?

One thing about this newsletter and about the Anger Management Resource site in general...we get to the causes here, to Stop The Anger Once And FOR ALL!

There are many different causes of anger addiction. Here are some of them:

  • Severe or chronic abuse, neglect or abandonment.

  • Being "spoiled" and given a false sense of self-importance in childhood. This is a less known and understood cause of anger issues, but it is a very powerful and common one. The sense of entitlement that comes from being favored and given special love and attention as a child can lead to a lot of anger when "the world" or the adult spouse does not "spoil" you the way your family of origin did.

  • Another cause of anger addiction is being raised by parents who allowed you to become a "tyrant" as a child, teaching you that your anger is a way of getting what you want and stopping what you don't want.

While there may be other causes of anger and rage addiction, I think these are the major three.

How Do You Cure Anger Addiction?

anger addiction

These are the steps to healing anger addiction, as I understand them after 37 years of helping people break the addictive cycle and create peace in their hearts:

  1. Explore your story--your life history, and identify all of the ways you've been hurt, abused, abandoned or neglected.

  2. Decide if you were spoiled or favored, or if you were allowed to control your family or friends with your anger.

  3. Write about these memories in great detail, until you can't think of another thing to say. This will help you a lot! Learn more about this type of anger management activity here.

  4. Identify all of the components of your own cycle of addiction, and write in detail about those. You may want to do this writing on this site.

  5. You may want to read one of these books or listen to some of these CDs to get the job done. Be sure to take advantage of all of the free anger management resources on this site!

  6. An interesing technique is to imagine yourself moving backwards through your addictive cycle. Do that over and over, until it starts to look and feel funny to you.

  7. If these techniques don't do the job, you probably need anger management counseling or, you might want to complete an anger management program.

Never, ever give up on yourself. You can do this, because you're a good person with a good heart. Stay with it, and you will get there.
