ADD Can Cause Anger Problems
Everyone with ADD is not angry, and that's a good thing. However, irritability and even anger outbursts are common symptoms of attention deficit disorder, in both children and adults.
Here's my theory about why adult ADD symptoms often include anger issues:
- It's just downright frustrating when you can't concentrate and focus.
- Other people tend to get angry at you for not showing up or following through, which can of course trigger your anger.
- For children with ADD, anger is a reaction to being overwhelmed, which is how it feels a lot of the time to someone with ADD.
- And then there's the part about not having an easy solution to the problem. There are no "quick fixes" for ADD.
- So as you can see, if a person has any tendencies at all toward anger, symptoms of ADD are very likely to make the anger worse.
The idea here is to understand ADD can cause anger issues, but even more important is what do you do about it?
How To Help Kids With ADD
First of all, I want to refer you to this entire page on ADD treatment.
I highly recommend a treatment approach for helping children with ADD and ADHD. The Total Focus program is designed by Dr. Robert Myers, a Child Psychologist who is also the father of a child with ADD.
Here are some other things you can do to help your child with ADD or ADHD:
- Create a safe, loving, structured environment in the home. This will help any child, especially one dealing with ADD.
- Emphasize positive feedback for positive behavior, reinforcing small steps in the direction of the behavior you desire. For example, if you want your child to stay at the table and eat his meal, smile at him often and tell him how much you enjoy being there at the table with him.
- Healthy, appropriate physical touch can be very grounding and centering to a child with ADD.
- Notice what your child likes, and what she is most likely to focus on. Then spend time with her while she is focused on that task or subject matter, telling her in friendly enthusiastic tones how well she is able to concentrate and pay attention.
Keep in mind that this is not a primary area of professional expertise for me (Dr. DeFoore). That is why I so highly recommend Dr. Myers' Total Focus program.
Help For Adults With ADD
Start by checking out entire page on adult ADD.
Adult attention deficit disorder often results from unresolved or unaddressed emotional issues. For that reason, I highly recommend that anyone dealing with adult ADD symptoms follow these steps:
Many people do not realize what a strong impact emotion has on mental concentration. Consider that emotional healing may be one of the best ways possible to address underlying issues behind adult attention deficit disorder.
Meditation Emotion And Healing
This excellent CD program is entitled, Meditation Emotion And Healing, and is available either in CD format or as an MP3 audio download. It will help you heal your emotional wounds from the past and mentally focus and concentrate through meditation.
Consider the time, energy (and maybe money) you are investing here as an investment in yourself, that will serve you and everyone you love for the rest and the best of your life.
P.S. Why not make the rest of your life the best of your life? You can get started right now with Elegant Aging: Growing Deeper, Stronger and Wiser.
